Details

  • : Oolong
  • : Nantou, Taiwan.
  • : Medium
  • : Legendarily picked by monkeys on the craggy mountains of Taiwan and named after Kuan Yin, the Goddess of compassion, this tea is stout, classic, and unforgettable. While no monkeys were employed in the harvesting (or processing) of this tea, the name suggests the rarity of this oolong.
  • : Smooth-bodied infusion with flavors of apricot and honey. The aroma is complex with accents of roasted nuts and caramel and hardy, woodsy notes.
  • : Warm chocolate chip cookies and Samovar’s Mushroom Quiche.

Flavor exactly as advertised May 9, 2011

An exceptional Oolong tea, very reasonably priced. I am very impressed with the quality. Flavor carries well through multiple steepings. The Samovar Monkey Picked Iron Goddess rivals much more expensive variaties of Oolong.

Very disappointed February 25, 2010
Reviewer: Anonymous Person from Providence, RI
The first time I had Iron Goddess of Mercy, it was farm fresh tea my brother had brought back from China. It had been sitting in my parents' pantry for two years before I discovered it there. It smelled and tasted like the high altitudes in which it was grown. Perhaps this is a hard act to follow, but I was very disappointed with Samovar's version. It almost seemed stale.

This tea is excellent! If you do not like the strong taste of some black teas, and you dislike the vegetal taste of green tea; this is the tea for you. I consider this a cross between a green and black tea. There is a mild taste of a traditional black tea with  subtle hints of the grassy flavor in many green teas.
